The exhibition, drawn from the gifts made to the museum by The Saul Steinberg Foundation, explores the contrasts between the adversity Steinberg faced and the witty, satirical art he produced.

The exhibition is based on a group of gifts to the museum of a variety of Steinberg’s art from The Saul Steinberg Foundation.

The focus of the exhibition is on Steinberg’s original approaches to conventional art media and conceptual practices such as trompe l’oeil, assemblage and “found” objects.

The show, Steinberg’s first presentation in Seoul, brings together works on paper and wood sculptures conveying the defiant humor, curiosity, and modernist attitude of an artist trying to make sense of the chaotic postwar period.

Based on gifts from The Saul Steinberg Foundation, the exhibition explores Steinberg’s vivid imagination and playful use of materials.

The exhibition was the first to showcase some of the original masks, gifted to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg by The Saul Steinberg Foundation, together with the photographs Inge Morath took between 1959 and 1962, which included other masks of diverse characters that became famous thanks to Morath’s photographs.

A 1952 visit to Saratoga Springs, New York, on commission from Harper’s Magazine, prompted Steinberg’s interest in thoroughbred horse racing. The drawings in this exhibition, gifts from The Saul Steinberg Foundation, span a period of four years from 1955 to 1959.
